When the temperature drops on the South Shore, mice, rats, and overwintering insects start looking for a warm place to spend the season — and your home is at the top of the list. The good news: most fall pest problems can be stopped before they start with one weekend of prep. Here’s the checklist we give our own customers.
1. Seal gaps around pipes and doors
A mouse can squeeze through a hole the size of a dime. Walk the outside of your home and check anywhere something enters it — pipes, vents, cable lines, the garage door, and exterior doors. Seal small gaps with caulk, plug larger ones with copper mesh or backer rod before caulking, and add a door sweep anywhere you can see daylight under a door. This one step does more to keep rodents out than any trap.
2. Store firewood away from the house
A firewood pile stacked against the siding is a heated hotel for rodents, spiders, and wood-boring insects — with a covered walkway straight into your home. Keep firewood at least 20 feet from the house, stacked off the ground, and only bring in what you’ll burn that day.
3. Fix window screens
Torn screens and gaps around basement windows are open doors for stink bugs, lady beetles, cluster flies, and spiders looking for a winter hiding spot. Patch or replace damaged screens now, and check that basement windows close and latch fully. While you’re at it, look at attic vents — a missing or damaged vent screen is one of the most common ways wildlife and insects get in.
4. Clear clutter from the basement
Pests love undisturbed hiding places, and a cluttered basement is full of them. Cardboard boxes are the worst offender — they hold moisture, and rodents and insects shelter and nest in them. Switch to sealed plastic bins, get stored items up off the floor, and clear out corners so you can actually see what’s going on down there. If something has already moved in, clutter is what lets it stay hidden.
Signs something already moved in
- Droppings along walls, in cabinets, or near the furnace
- Scratching or scurrying sounds in walls or ceilings at night
- Gnaw marks on stored food, boxes, or wiring
- A musty, urine-like smell in the basement or attic
If you’re seeing any of these, sealing alone won’t solve it — the pests are already inside, and they’ll keep breeding through the winter.
